Scholarships for Nursing Students
There are additional methods to finance your way through school and college and that's to seek out and apply for nursing student scholarships which are available for graduate and undergraduate nursing students.
Nursing school scholarships generally entitle you to funds which don't have to be repaid and there are literally hundreds available from universities, your state and other institutions that can be worth thousands of dollars.
There are terms and conditions as some are specifically for minority groups including hispanic, asian, black, african american etc) and some are needs based where others are not.
Government Scholarships
Various US government departments have scholarship programs although they are always over subscribed so ensure you meet the entry criteria and complete your application form correctly. Here are some of the scholarships available:
- US Department of Health and Human Resources (HRSA) - in exchange for 2 years working this scheme pays all tutition fees (directly to the school), other reasonable costs and a monthly stipend of $1,269
- The US Department of Education Pell Grant scheme is for students in financial need and awards a maximum of $5,350 per year although this is set to increase by 2012
- National Health Corps / State Loan Repayment Program up to $50,000
- US Department of Veterans Affairs Nurse Fellowship Program awards $35,000 per year funding for full-time pre-doctoral Nurse Fellows and stipends for part-time fellows.
State Scholarships
- Delaware Department of Education Scholarship Incentive Program (ScIP) for local residents pays from GPA score of 2.5 $700 per year to GPA 3.75 $2,200 per year
- D.C. Nurses Training Corps Grant
- Michigan Nursing Scholarship is a non-need based award of $4,000 per year
- Indiana State Nursing Scholarship with a GPA of at least 2.0 on a scale of 4.0 awards a maximum $5,000 per year
- State of Virginia department of health awards scholarships of between $5,000 and $20,000 with funds from the VA general assembly.
- Illinois Department of Public Health (center for rural health) Nursing Education Scholarship Program Students pursuing an associate degree, a baccalaureate degree or a graduate degree in nursing: $4,942 for tuition and fees (estimate) and $5,943 for living expense stipend (estimate)
Private Scholarships
- AfterCollege / AACN Nursing Scholarship Fund is for baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral degree in nursing and awards scholarships of up to $2,500 - candidates must have a GBA of 3.25 or more
- The American Academy of Nursing, with support from the John A. Hartford Foundation of New York City and the Atlantic Philanthropies has 2 scholarship programs The Predoctoral Scholarship program is designed to support 2 years of doctoral work for nurses committed to careers in academic geriatric nursing. The program awards a total of $100,000 ($50,000 per annum) to each selected Predoctoral Scholar candidate. The Claire M. Fagin Fellowship provides $120,000 for the 2-year fellowship ($60,000 per annum) for advanced research training and mentorship designed to assist doctorally-prepared nurses committed to faculty careers in geriatric nursing
- TYLENOL Scholarship program offers awards from $5,000 to $10,000 per year
- Oncology Nursing Society Foundation Academic Scholarships for oncology courses awarding $2,000 for bachelor's scholarships, $3,000 for Master's and Post-Master's Certificate Scholarships and $3-$5,000 for Doctoral Scholarships
- National Black Nursing Association (NBNA) awards between $500 and $2,000
- Daughters of the American Revolution has two schemes that both award a maximum of $1,000 these are the Caroline E. Holt Nursing Scholarship and the Mildred Nutting Nursing Scholarship
- March of Dimes offers several $5,000 scholarships annually to registered nurses enrolled in graduate programs of maternal-child nursing.
- American Cancer Society Scholarships - Master’s Degree Scholarships in Cancer Nursing $10,000 / year and Doctoral Degree Scholarships in Cancer Nursing: $15,000 / year
- American Assembly for Men in Nursing (AAMN Foundation) Johnson & Johnson Scholarship $1,000 Jadeh Moore and the Student Nurse Essay Contest $500
- Army Nurse Corps Association (ANCA) in memory of Captain Gussie M. Jones $3,000
- BECA Foundation Scholarship - applicants must be entering the Medical and Health Care profession and to be living in or attending a high school or college in San Diego County at the time of application. Awards range between $l,000 - $2,000 per academic year.
University Scholarships
- University of California, San Francisco School of Nursing, in conjunction with the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation award $60,000 per year
- Western Michigan University Bronson School of Nursing Scholarships has various levels from $500 to $5,000
- Washington State University College of Nursing Scholarship Opportunities
- San Diego State University Richard Bea RN Memorial Nursing Scholarship $3,000 1st place, $1,500 second place.
- University of Central Florida have 22 scholarship programs available
- South Dakota State University Scholarships double for SDSU accelerated nursing students award up to 10 students $10,000 each year
